Recently the oil pressure light came on in my 99 Honda Accord.  It has, unfortunately, been 5K since my last oil change.  When I checked the oil, I found that I was 3 quarts low.  I took the car to the dealer and they did not find any leaks.  They told me that it is not unusual for a car to burn 3 quarts of oil of 5K miles.  Is this true? It seemed a little excessive to me.  

it depends on the condition of the endine. its a 1999 so their should not be any huge engine oil burn unless they are out the tail pipe (the engine is burning it, compared to leaking it) an engine that new, should not burn that much oil in that small period of time if the engine was looked after.  

the reason oil would be burnt is if it was getting past the piston rings and into the combustion chamber. how many kms/miles are on the engine?

Unless the vehicle smokes, I speculate that the last oil change was 2 or 3 quarts short. Since the car is out of warranty, stop taking the car to a dealership service center, especially this one! Gather some opinions on local independent repair shops, or learn how to change the oil/filters yourself from a knowledge friend. You'll save yourself some money and understand what's going in, and coming out of your vehicle.

Then , you can can check the emmission smoke, whether it is blue. if it is blue, it means the oil is in the engine cylinder. the piston ring is wearing out.
