before changing the starter... you need to verify that the battery cables are clean... behind the bolts.. and that the cables don't wiggle ...

you should also check the state of charge of the battery..

if the battery is low... or the cables are dirty.. the starter may just click...

you also need to take the end of the negative cable off the engine block clean the end with a stainless steel wire tooth brush from the hardware store or some sand paper..   if the ground cable is dirty at the block..  the starter won't work also..

if you have a digital volt meter.. you can check the battery voltage..

a fully charged battery should read 12.65 volts..
a half charged battery will read 12.45 volts.
a quarter charged battery will read 12.25 volts.. the starters will usually not work with less than a quarter charge on the battery..

i went looking for information on removing the starter... i did find that the flat rate book calls for an hour for a professional... and the quickest they have done them is 40 minutes.. so its not that easy...   usually on other gm cars... you take one end of the torque strut loose..and rock the motor up slightly. giving you more room for the starter access...
