I have a 2000 mercury cougar v6 standard and I just changed the battery in it. However the battery light is still on and I'm wondering if it has to be reset? Please let me know! thank you.

you have to check the charging system with a digital volt meter...
it should be over 14 volts with the engine running...
read your owners manual... if you still have it.. see if the battery light tells you that the changing system is having a problem..
what ever you *** DO not pull the battery cable with the engine running.. you can cause thousands of dollars worth of damage to your car... digital volt meters start at 5 bucks.. most chain parts stores have computerized charging system testers to check your alternator output.. almost every shop in the country can test it also...
but if you see somebody about to pull a battery cable to test it.. stop them... get in your car and drive away... they are going to blow your alternator and possibly much of your electrical system..
