I read where a 14" inch tire has more side wall so the ride would be softer than a 15" tire which has less side wall. However, a tire shop told me that alloy rim(which only comes 15" for my car) makes a ride softer also. With a high quality tire like the yokohoma avid touring s, which would be more softer of a ride: 1) 14" steel wheel or 2) 15" alloy wheel? i don't care about handling or anything else...just want the ride to be soft as possible on my 1990 Volvo 24 DL.

Assuming everything else the same, the tire with the taller sdewall will have a better ride.

A lighter tire and wheel assembly will also get to a better ride.  But as a general rule, alloy wheels are only slightly lighter than steel wheels - and certainly going up in diameter increases the weight of the wheel.

So my vote is for the 14" steel being better.
