2001 6 liter v8 with over 190,000 miles. When should the timing chain be changed?

climb under the truck... take a socket and breaker bar... find a socket to fit on the center crank bolt... rock the crank back and forth... you will feel when the timing chain gets tight... all the slack is removed going one direction.. then how far it moves in the other direction...
i would expect that you might get up to half an inch of movement on the outside of the damper with that many miles...
if you get more than 5/8" of movement... i would say its time... that is the easiest way to tell... only takes a few minutes..
i took a peek over at the parts... the parts computer says you have to replace the oil pan gasket when you pull the timing cover...
hopefully there will be more opinions... but that is how i test timing chain slack on other engines...
