I have a 1999 E350 SD with a 5.4L that give me engine Code P 0401, EGR Flow Insufficient.  Have checked all pipes and vacuum lines and all seem intact.  When it's cleared it runs good, not in default, until the next time I'm sitting in traffic for a long time.  Past experience with some Fords is the pipes come loose from exhaust.  This appears to come from near the front of the manifold.  Any ideas?  

since the system is like the ford taurus...

change the exhaust back pressure transducer...      the metal versions have been replaced with a plastic version to end internal corrosion problems

and probably the egr solenoid...  they also tend to quit...  

then reset the codes...

this cures the taurus and sables... without anything else..
