When I buy a new car from a dealer, does the dealer have to register it with the state? Can I register it myself and avoid paying several hundred dollars for something that will only cost me $20 if I do myself?

probably not... depends on the state...
but most cars are registered on a sliding scale.. the more the value or cost of the car.. the higher the registration fees... drops a bit each year...
there are also sales taxes that are usually paid to/through the DMV...
ever seen the bumper sticker... cash, grass, XSS , nobody rides for free.. they were not kidding... thats the secret moto of the DMV.. and the car insurance companies..
almost makes you want your clunker back.. at least till you roll up the windows.. turn on the working ac... power up the sound system... and drive past gas stations for hundreds of miles at a time..

Another item to check in the fine print. Some states have a stipulation that allows a car dealer to charge you a fee for providing you with the paperwork you need to register your car. For example, lets say the dealer charges $150 to register the car and he DMV fee is only $20. Problem is the dealer may be allowed to impose a fee for the paperwork. I've read a dealer's disclosure information that stated you would only save $10 by going and registering your car yourself. Hardly worth doing. So be sure to find out if the dealer can impose this type of fee.
