I recently purchased a Tracker for a good price. It hesitates in all gears and going up hill. It starts quickly but stalls 3 to 4 times. Then it will idle very rough. Lately after driving it about 15 minutes it just loses power till I downshift to third. Powers up in 3rd but then loses power again in 3rd, 4th,& 5th gears. Stalls at every intersection. My morning drive is about an hour. After sitting for 8 hours semm to run better but if its damp it run poorly again. After driving for a while, morning or evening I can smell gas but find no leaks.
Vaccum hoses are all in good shape, gas filter changed, added some gas treatment. I know ththis is a common problem with these vehicles. Have a whole host of things to do as check gas pressure, check EGR, etc.
This vehicle has a fuel injected throtlebody.
Suggestions welcome.

why don't you read the trouble codes....
in front of the battery.. there is a 4 terminal connector that has a cover over the open end.. use a short chunk of wire to jump B to C then climb into the drivers seat and turn the ignition switch to the on position.. you will get 2 digit codes...
there is free repair info over at autozone... HOME REPAIR INFO 1992 GEO TRUCK TRACKER 2WD 1.6L TBI SOHC 4CYL REPAIR GUIDE DRIVEABILITY & EMISSION CONTROLS TROUBLE CODES CLEARING CODES
this is the section you want to get to online...at autozone.com to see what the codes are.....
you might also want to check all the tuning items.. like spark plugs, spark plug wires, cap , rotor... coil... check for restricted exhaust..
if could also be a bad injector... an ECM going bad.. it looks like a mitsubishi built ECM.. but i cannot tell from here...

Compression tester, check the cylinders, these vehicles have a naq for cracking heads\burning piston rings.
the smell of gas may be running rich, try unplugging the oxygen sensor and it will run like a lawn mower. Not the best approach but if it runs better then get one of those for about 20$ and replace it.
If you have low compression on all 4 cylinders you could probably use a head gasket\valve adjustment and or a piston\gasket\ring kit, the piston kit runs around 195$ + shipping.
A friend and I bought a Geo tracker and we beat the tar out of it. We recently built a snorkel and cold air intake for it, took the oxygen sensor completely off and it runs a lot better than it ever did with it on.!!!

Being throttle body injected theres a possibility that the injector seals are leaking, this will cause poor runability and also a difficult to detect fuel leak (since its leaking into the intake). Remove your air induction and watch your fuel injectors while running, there should be a steady mist coming out of them. If you see any fuel spilling or dripping from the injectors then the seals are bad. GL

I have a geo and it runs like poo.
Any ideas on how to fix the seals besides buying new injectors?

3po.... autozone.com has free repair info on their web site.. if you register and log in on many systems of these cars...
there are just a lot of problem and since i don't work on those very often i am not that familiar with them...
depending on the year.. there are trouble codes to access.. some easy to get.. some a PIA...
check for a restricted exhaust system first... if no restriction.. check the oxygen sensors that they swing full range when forced to with a vacuum leak to the intake and then a shot of carb cleaner into the intake to force them the other way..
dirty fuel filters.. dirty air filters..
yes.. the injectors do have problems with seals.. and with the injector windings shorting internally.. the last one i really had problems with.. had a leaking heater core.. it filled the wiring harness with coolant and water.. it also filled the ecm with coolant and water.. not a good thing.. most of the logic circuits run at 5 volts.. and there is 12 volts on the board.. so if the 12 volts get to the 5 volt circuit.. the smoke gets let out of the circuit..
