My daughter owns a 2003 Dodg Neon with only 49,000 miles. Several weeks ago the trans cooler in the radiator failed and the transmission fluid mixed with the coolant. My mechanic immediately said I needed to replace the radiator and get a new tranmission. At that point I was thinking of junking the car but I guy I work with suggested replacing the radiator and flushing the transmission fluid clean. After the replacement and multiple flushings (I went through at least 24 quarts of fluid until fluid was clear). Since then the car has driven and shifted normally except when de-accelerating at a stop where it has a mild clunk shifiting down to the low gear. I have driven it several hundred miles and it does not seem to be getting better or worse. My question is what are the chances this transmission will get progressively worse over time or is there a chance it will just keep running normally as it is now?

It depends how long the trans was contaminated. It takes a while for the coolant to do permanent damage. The clunking on the downshift could be caused by many things.Have the computer scanned for codes. If there are no codes then disconnect the neg battery cable and hold the brake pedal down for 30 seconds. Then reconnect the battery. Then take the car out an do a relearn procedure. This consists of doing runs from a stop to 4th gear without changing the throttle input. In other words start from a stop and then let the car shift from first all the way to 4th while holding the throttle steady.Do several runs in light , medium and heavy throttle.Try to find a place thats long enough to get to 4th gear but with no traffic so you dont have to stop.
PS:What kind of fluid did you use ? The wrong fluid can also cause the problem your having.

Thanks for your note. I will try your reccomendation. Right now it's still the same, no better, no worse. I did use the right fluid when doing the flush so that is not an issue.
