I found a 2005 Dodge Neon SE with 15000 miles on it, and got the dealer down to 8000. I don't care about luxury, accessories, or appearance (am fine with manual locks, windows, seats, etc.) which is why I'm fine with the SE, my main concern is with the cost of ownership and the mechanical quality of the car. This car is strictly for getting from point A to point B, I won't be driving it hard. Is it a money pit, or is okay as long as I do recommended maintenance? It was previously owned by an elderly couple in their 80s and has a clean Carfax report, so it should be in fine condition to start. Some people have told me that the Neon is great, others have told me that it's a piece of crap. Is buying this a good idea, or would a Honda/Toyota economy car with more miles on it for around the same price be a better buy?

You should check out the Kia Rio. You can get a good 2006 for under 5k. IDK about the Riobut the Rio5 has an aux port for an ipod or zune which is nice, but no cruise control. Rio has way better MPG to I think.

Hello, I went through this company called King Autos, they go to dealer auctions for you and you basically pay the dealer price. Depending on the stat you're in, I'm sure they will find you the same car for less than $8,000. I bought a 2005 Neon with 23,000 miles for $6,000. It's worth a try. I went to their website and I guess they are updating it, but I still have their number 888-242-7234. I spoke with Inglishe, she really helped me. Her direct email is Inglishe@king-autos.com. I hope this hekps
