After replacing both OEM rear cables, OEM lever cable, OEM tensioner and adjuster, new rotors and brakes and bringing it to a dealer, my 4wheel drive Jeep's parking brakes will not hold more than 1100 RPMs in Drive 1 (automatic tranny) My state inspection requires 1200-1300 RPMs. The rear cables and the lever cable seem too long making it impossible to tighten the slack in the cables with the tensioner and adjuster.  I even changed the rotors a second time because the dealer thought they were oversized. Any and all suggestions appreciated.

These procedures apply only to 1994-98 Grand Cherokee models equipped with rear disc brakes.

Removal & Installation

Raise the vehicle and safely support it with jackstands. Remove the wheel.

Remove the caliper from the rotor and support the caliper with a piece of wire to a suspension component.

Remove the rubber access plug from the rear of the disc brake splash shield.

Retract the parking brake shoes by rotating the star wheel downwards in a clockwise direction (while facing the front of the vehicle) using a brake adjustment tool or equivalent.

Remove the rotor from the axle hub flange.

Remove the shoe hold-down clips and pins and the upper and lower springs from the shoes using needle nose pliers. Mark the adjuster screw for installation reference, then tilt the shoes outward and remove the adjuster screw.

Remove the shoes.

To install:
Install the shoes with the hold-down pins and clips making sure the shoes are properly seated in the caliper bracket and cam.

Install the adjuster screw assembly and the shoe upper and lower return springs. Operate the lever to verify the shoes expand and retract properly.

Install the rotor and caliper. Adjust the parking brake assembly as outlined in this section.

Install the wheel, lower the vehicle and verify that the parking brake is working properly.

ADJUSTMENT

Raise the vehicle and safely support it with jackstands.

Remove the wheel and secure the rotor with two wheel nuts.

Remove the rubber access plug from the rear of the splash shield and insert a brake tool.

Position the brake tool at the bottom of the star wheel and rotate the star wheel upward (counterclockwise) to expand the shoes.

Expand the shoes until a slight drag is experienced, then back off the adjuster so that the drag is barely eliminated.

Replace the access plug, install the wheel and lower the vehicle.

i think that this will help....

let us know what you find....  and please if you have them apart... DO NOT use dielectric tune up grease to lube the adjuster ... you would like what happens...
