it would really help knowing what year, make, model and engine size... there are thousands of different cars...
first.. make sure your battery if fully charged... 12.65 volts... on a digital volt meter...
cheep volt meters can be had for 5 bucks.. decent ones .. under 30 bucks... any will work for these tests..
volt meter set on 20 volt DC scale...
measure between the negative battery post and the engine block... have someone try to start the motor.. if you get over 0.5 volts... while the engine is cranking.. you might have a problem...
remember.. the volt meter only looks at differences in voltage between its test leads... so if you have a bad ground wire... there will be difference between the block and the battery..
turn on the head lights... test between the battery negative post and the body... the reading should be below 0.02.. if you get more than that... perhaps the body ground circuits are bad also...
remember.. the motor sits on rubber mounts... so it is mostly isolated... everything in car has to have a good ground contact...... or it just won't work...
the test above... is called a voltage drop test... and is usually the first test done by really professional techs...
as for the ground cable replacement..
disconnect it from the battery... disconnect it from the body... disconnect it from the engine block ... make sure that you reconnect it at all places.... oh.. you noticed that there is a screw holding the cable to the fender... look closely at the bracket the screw goes through... some of the brackets are actually soldered to the wire... mid point... so the body is grounded...
so much more...
what kind of car... what kind of problems...
