Hey,

I bought myself a 1987 Pontiac 6000, She is an awesome first car for me, I am not new to mechanics but I have hit a dead end sort of. So far I've changed the brake/gas lines, PCV valves, all the filters, refreshed all the fluids, cleaned the injectors and changed the sparkplugs and wires. She runs loud as anything and I am getting a decent amount of oil in the cylinders. It sounds to me like the head of the engine is dying and probably needs new rods and seals, but I am not eager to crack open the head and rebuild it.

Any ideas on what I can do to get her running better?

thanks

The engine is definatly the one that is loud. I am not losing oil at an alarming rate and the exhaust isn't pissing out blue smoke. When you open the hood you can smell raw gas, you can also smell it while the car is running (O2 sensor?) If you take out the spark plugs you can smell even more gas and oil. There is also a tapping sound when she is running, which I *** to be hardened seals in the head. Oh yeah, if I push her to go (floor it) she stalls out at about 60kph and the engine floods. She also lack power.

any ideas?

you didn't say if you are using a muffler on that car.  check on your dipstick too if you are way beyond the recommended oil.  check whether the dipstick that you are using is the right one for the engine.  since it is a 1987 car, it may have been replaced incorrectly, probably it's too short.  seems like you have replaced almost any part that i could think of.  Have you done some tune-up on the engine, that is if the valve clearance are right and is opening and closing correctly?  verify that there's no leak on your exhaust from the engine to the end, because noises like that are the cause of small openings in the exhaust, check the seals to the engine too.  give us some updates on your car.  thanks.

I have a Pontiac 6000 as well.  The tapping sound you have is very common in those cars.  It is actually a collapsed oil lifter.  You might try and get a lifter kit for that car and replace those.

As for the oil you might want to drain it all....  Get 4 quarts of fresh SAE 30 weight motor oil.  I use Cheveron SAE 30.  Put that in there.  If you exhaust is not showing any signs of a lot of blue smoke than that means that your valve guide seals are just fine.

I had a collapsed lifter in two of these cars.  Very common problem for this make of car.  Replace the lifters, and a fresh oil change should fix it.
