Rough shift into Drive - 1993 Honda Accord

A friend recently gave me a 93 Accord that needed some repairs. When shifting the car from Park to Drive (or Reverse for that matter), the shift into gear is rough. I hear a faint whistling sound, and then the transmission shift engages. When the car is warming up as I drive it, the shifts between 1st and 2nd are also a little rough. There is no slippling, just rather abrupt shifting.

I thought that maybe the motor mounts might be contributing to the issue when I shift from Park to Drive, but they look like they have been replaced recently. The trans fluid looks a little dirty, so I really don't know when it was last changed.

The service manual recommends Honda Premuim Formula ATF or Dexron II, although I have read elsewhere that many recommend that you use genuine Honda ATF only. Can you use Dexron VI in this transmission? What is your recommendation as far as ATF is concerned? Any ideas in regard to the rough shift from Park to Drive?

There is a cable going from the trans to the throttle body. The cable controls line pressure in the trans.Check to see if the cable operates smoothly. There is also an adjustment on the bracket that holds the cable to the trans{2 twelve mm nuts}.Moving the cable further down {toward the ground} makes the trans shift softer. However unless someone messed with the adjustment it should be ok.The other and more likely problem is that the valve the cable operates is stuck. You could try a fluid additive that helps unstick valves like lube guard. They make one that is specifically for hondas.Reach down and grab the lever that the cable attaches to on the trans.Operate the lever by hand through its full motion sharply 4 or 5 times.this might free up the valve. If you cant free up the valve then the only way to fix it is to get inside the trans.

Thanks for your help. I'll definitely try the things that you suggested.
