Hi,
My 98 Toyota Corolla does not start up every evening but it starts without any problem in the morning. Here is the sequence of events:
- Wednesday morning(around 8.30am,after a gap of 6 days) I used my car and it started without any problem.
- Wednesday evening around 4pm i leave office and try to start the car. All the indicator lights come on the first time I insert the key but the car does not start. I removed the key and tried a second time, none of the indicator lights come on.
- I tried again after 20 minutes and the car started without any problem.
- Thursday morning(around 8.30), the car starts without any problem
- Thursday evening, around 5pm leave office and the same thing happens as the previous day. The first time all the indicator lights come on, the car does not start. The second time nothing happens. Tried again after some time, no luck this time.
could someone give some pointers to what the problem could be?
Thanks Shyam

are the battery cables dirty or corroded???? loose????
it is possible that the starter contacts inside it are going bad...
look up a dormanproducts.com 02349 it is a set of starter internal contacts... you have to remove the starter to get to them.. take out the 3 phillips screws that hold the cover on... the half moon shaped cover... not the round motor cover.. you can take out the plunger disc... take out the starter contacts from the side of the solenoid housing.. use the new parts that match and reinstall them... you do have to understand.. these parts are insulated with plastic insulators from the case..
why.. one contact will wear do to arcing.. the disc cannot bend on the shaft far enough to contact across the pair.. at which point the starter goes click click click... but won't crank...
here is the wiring diagram of the starting system

there is a starter relay somewhere under the hood... or in the relay box.. that could also be bad... or going bad...
hope this helps..

Thanks for the reply guys.
The battery was loose because the nut and screw which hold the battery down were missing. Also the battery was not of the correct size to fit in the physical space. This caused the battery to move around which led to loose connections.
