Doing some maintenace on the vehicle I unhooked the battery. When finished I replaced the cables and went to start the engine and the 4x4 service lit came on and won't go off. The lit indicators on the AWD HI and LO shift switch are off. What could I have possible done to cause this?

i would think that disconnecting the NEGATIVE cable end again... waiting 30 seconds or so... and reconnecting the negative cable without making a bunch of intermittent contacts when connecting it... get it on and tight in one move... tighten it after you get it wedged on...
if you disconnected or connected the battery with the KEY ON (BAD IDEA)... very bad idea...
you can damage things...
what ever you do.. if you have to test the charging system.. DO NOT PULL A CABLE OFF WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING> this will for sure damage the alternator... may damage thousands of dollars of your electronic controls...
who ever started that trick ... was out to make money by blowing up parts of the car so they could charge to fix them...
post what you find...
