Recently when I put the transmission into D or R it occasionally takes a few seconds to engage, I don't notice any other problems or signs of slippage when underway. Is this a sign of major transmission work in my future or a minor glitch. I am original owner, truck has 172k miles, engine seems to be in excellent shape.

Does it happen only when cold or only when hot or when it sits for a while or is it totally random? Is the engine idle where it should be?Have you had the pan dropped for a service recently? If so what was in the pan or on the screen? That is a very good transmission.I have taken them apart with 300,000 miles on them and you could still see the part numbers on the clutches. It does not necessarily mean you are headed for big trouble. You could try tightening the adjustment on the throttle cable a little{the cable from the trans to the throttle linkage}.That will raise line pressure a little and will help the trans perform better as it gets older. If your shifts are too late and too firm then you went to far with the adjustment. The adjustment is two 14mm nuts that hold the cable to the bracket. If you move the cable body away from the the throttle linkage that will raise line pressure.
