i rebuilt a 47 re from end to end and put in a new converter and new solinoids it shifts good 1-2-3 but when it hits 4th it sounds like and feels like it slips and is very slugish like its sliping. i took the overdrive unit off thinking it was the clutches slipping and causing heat they are in good shape not burnt and no heat marks on steels and same goes for the OD directs. the fluid is good and clear and it only gets hot in overdrive. could i have put somethig back in the valve body wrong to cause th torque converter to slip? any help would be nice thanks

First thing is What did you find wrong when you rebuilt the trans and what was it doing before the overhaul? If it is actually slipping the clutches would have to be burnt {OD}unless they are not applying at all.In that case the trans would not slip it would stay in 3rd.That might increase engine temp a little. When you say the trans gets hot do you have a temp gauge on it?Another possibility is that rather than a slip it is binding up somehow{something applied when it shouldn't be}On some transmissions no lock up can cause overheating but you wouldn't feel a slip. And that should cause a code in the computer.Did you look at the 4th accumulator and spring under the steel cover on the valve body? Also make sure the OD cancel and lock up soliniod body is not loose or the gasket misplaced or torn.

thanks for the reply it needed rebuilt because the over drive clutches were cooked and the over drive thrust bearing went out. i dont have a temp gauge on it i need to but it gets hot enough that u cant hold ur hand on the case. this is the second out of truck repair the first time i rebuit it 1000 miles later the overdrive thrust bearing went out. every thing was tordown and cleand and a few od ctutches were replaced . im gonna tear in to the valve body and check all that crap. and if its not that i orderd some pressure test gauges from OTC mabey hopefully i will find a pressure problem any thing to give me a hit of the problem. thanks agin thats was a big help

Did you by any chance check the check valve in the cooler line?????Some times they will stick and only let partial fluid low through the cooler.
