I have a 99 Ranger 4cyl, 2 wheel drive, Auto w/overdrive that has 65k miles. Transmission serviced 8mos ago. Last weekend noticed when you go to put it into reverse or drive it takes a while to go into gear and makes a winding sound and sounds like it slowly goes into gear. Once into gear, it doesn't slip at all. If you stop at a light or stop sometimes, when you go to take off, it slowly goes into gear and works fine until you stop again. Transmission does not feel like it's slipping once you're going with it.
Had purchased this truck about a year ago and since I've owned it, it's always made a winding sound but always went into gear. Had brought it to a transmission shop and they said, they put a scan tool on it and said solenoids looked good but transmission must be rebuilt. Hard to believe with only 60k on it and was only used at hospital parking lot. Does this sound right or could it be something else?

Reverse and forward have no drums or bands in common so your problem is line pressure related. Your problem is most likely valve body related.A common problem is the valve body gaskets fail.Drop the valve body and look for a torn or missing chunk of gasket. If not check the valves to see if they are stuck. You can also install a transgo
jr shift kit which dramatically improves the performance of that trans.

Thanks for the info. Will take that apart and look at it this week and let you know how I make out.

*F.Y.I* I did find out from a friend that it has a AYLD Transmission. If that makes any difference.

Actually it should be a 4R45E.When you drop the pan if there is a lot of metal in there you may need an overhaul. Some fine metal on the magnet is normal
