Problem started with clunky, inconsistent shifting from second to third ... then from first to second. I found a certain speed where the car would shift (too fast and it felt like it was slipping), which worked for awhile. Now it doesn't work at all. First gear only.
Didn't have the cash for new tranny, got a beater to get me by.
Is this likely a need-a-new-tranny situation, or are there alternatives... i.e. some sensor etc. And are there any suggestions aside from taking it to a dealer and getting mugged on "diagnostics"?

when automatic transmissions start to slip.... they won't last very long... the clutches are designed for the tiny amount of slippage between gears ... but ... the material the stock automatic clutch faces are made of... just won't take slippage ...
it really sounds like you need to have your transmission rebuilt...
servicing the transmission... dropping the pan... letting the fluid pour out as you loosen the pan...
examining the residue in the bottom of the pan for .... metal particles... brass, steel , aluminum... how much clutch material ... it will be sediment... the color and smell of the fluid... bright red.. good.. almost black... bad... examine the filter for sediment and particles... and blockage...
when transmission clutches wear.. they lose wear surface .. this gets into the filter and restricts the flow of fluid.. restricted fluid.. reduced pressures in the transmission... more slippage... a downward spiral leading to your wallet...
it really does sound like you have burned up the transmission...
there are lots of options for replacements... dealers, chain transmission shops, independent transmission rebuilders, performance transmission rebuilders. repair shops who can get rebuilt or used transmissions...
