I have a 1995 Chevrolet Lumina. When I coast or stop, and then accelerate, the transmission will not catch for a time. After several seconds of the engine slowing down, the transmission will catch hard and loud. The transmission will then act normally. Also, when the car is idling sometimes it will make a clunking noise every couple of minutes. What is likely the problem with this transmission and will a master rebuild kit solve the problem?

Don't even attempt it yourself! Take it to a reputable tranny shop. You have a torque convertor problem and pending the miles with it being a 95 you may be in need of other intrnal service.

The 1-2 roller clutch is broken. A complete tear down will be required to repair the problem. Plan on a rebuild if the transmission has 100,000+ miles.
