I have a 94 wrangler 2.5 liter 4 cyl. that has trouble starting, smells like fuel, and once it does start it backfires and dies. Cant keep it running by giving it gas, and feels like it has no power when you do give it gas, sputters and shakes. Anyone have any suggestions?

Tons of stuff to check, but you didn't mention how many miles it has and what have you attempted or have replaced so far.
