Hi, My 1997 Ranger's temp gauge dips slowly to toward the cold range when the truck is warmed up and the rpm's are above 3000rpm. I have changed the thermostat, temp sensor, and bled the system of air. The ambient temp is around 45 degrees. The truck never overheats. With the lower hose off the waterpump, I can see the vanes of the pump and they look ok. Any ideas?????????

Is it a new thermostat? Is it the right teperature rating? Is it in stalled the right direction?. Got the proper antifreeze mixture? Got a well broken in engine running teflon or other engine fighting friction reducers in the oil? Otherwise, I can tell you I found this a few times before, mostly on trucks. Many have a larger radiator because they were built to anticipate hauling something, which so many people don't do, just ride around in them. When the engine works, under load (weight in it), engine generates more heat from combustion and the larger radiator can cool it to a normal temp. Run around in colder weather with light to no load and the radiator takes for ever to warm up, more coolant than it needs. You can verify this by blocking off about 1/2 to 3/4 of the air flow to the radiator with a peice of cardboard.
Note, ever see on the "Big Rigs" the louvered vents on the radiator air intake? Now you know why!

This is the second thermostat and I tested it in hot water before install. I am the original owner and the truck has only done this 1 other time under warranty and Ford changed thermostat...........

If blocking the radiator fails, try replacing the coolant temperature sensor.

Thanks for all the ideas. Turns out it was a partially clogged radiator. Replaced the radiator and now the temp gauge is steady at all rpms.....

"Turns out it was a partially clogged radiator." Thanks for the reply with the solution to your problem. What do you believe caused the radiator to clog? Infrequent flushing, radiator additive, worn out hoses, or other?
