I bought a used Toyota 4-Runner SR5 2 wheel drive with 118,000 miles on it that was not running. It had been sitting for about a year. It would not start. I found a new timing belt had been installed, and a couple spark plug wires were reversed. So far I have drained and cleaned the fuel tank, installed a new fuel pump, cleaned the fuel lines and installed a new fuel filter. I have installed all new fuel injectors, new spark plugs and wires and distributor. The timing was reset and the belt was checked to verify proper settings. Ever tweeked one click each way to verift it had not jumped timing. There is plenty of compression, slightly more on driver's side. Even checked the cat converter and it had already been blown clean. Fuel, spark, compression, and unrestricted exhaust and it runs like a 20 horsepower engine with a hollow tinny sound. Anybody have any ideas what could be wrong?

FYI We found the problem. The engine had been timed to the passenger side top dead center. The driver side shear pin on the cam had sheared but still looked to be in place. A test of removing plug wires on each side of engine while it was running revealed this problem. The pin had to be drilled out of the cam gear. Now all is well. Thought you might like to know if anyone is still reading this.
