I recently bought a 2000 Corolla with 120,000 miles. It is using 1/2 quart of oil each day of 180 mile commute to & from work. There are no oil spots under the car, aqround the engine & it does not smoke. Any ideas where the oil is going? Thanks, Don.

you might google this term
1zzfe oil consumption
seems you are not alone...
just curious.. if it happened after an overheating... where a loss of engine coolant happened...
if so... the low tension oil control rings are probably coated and locked in place with carbon build up...
overheating takes the tension out of them...
manufacturers have been using low tension oil control rings for decades... to get better fuel economy.. with less friction..

check PCV system... verify a TOYOTA brand PCV valve is installed..
check amount of crankcase blowby...
check crank case breather / separator...
you might have a cylinder leak down test performed.... this test uses a cylinder leak down tester tool to let a preset amount of air into the cylinder.. individual cylinders can be compared... the pressure gauge is calibrated in percentage of leak down...
a compression test can also be done at the same time...
decades ago... i worked in an engine rebuilder.. one customer kept coming back after his rebuilds and complaining of excessive oil use.. 400 miles per quart... the boss rebuilt the motor 3 times before he ask me.. i could not find a single thing wrong with any of the motors that were returned.. but the oil usage continued.. when the customer returned with the latest free motor.. same complaint.. i got a look under the hood.. seems after talking to him... that the problem happened after he did the first major tune up on the original motor.. and that the PCV was the only thing that had not been changed since then.. i told him to buy one at the dealership.. and only accept on in a sealed box from that manufacturer.. a month later the truck owner returned.. not using a drop.. the size difference was a lot.. inside... not visible when installed...
