One of the guys at work changed the trans fluid on a 2003 volvo s60, 2.435L eng non/turbo 59K miles. He didn't see a dip stick, so he removed the drain plug, caught the fluid, and poured the same amount into what he thought was a fill hole in the top of the trans. Took the volvo for a test drive: trans shifts out of first then slips. He couldn't find a dip stick. I looked and couldn't find one, another guy in the shop looked and found the dip stick hiding behind the radiator hose. Then he went on the Identifix site and found a post that said: Caution do not remove plug on top of trans, this is a common mistake. Did he ruin the trans? Can anything be done without r & r?

i don't see a lot of newer volvos.. there are transmission pans that have 2 drain plugs .. one on the bottom.. one on a step that is a little higher.. you have to pump fluid straight up through the higher drain plug hole to get it in the transmission.. once you get close to what came out... you start the motor.. run it through the gears with the wheels up in the air and free to turn... step on the brake.. put it back in park and continue pumping atf into it until it runs out when you pull back..
i don't know which plug he took out... but he might have undone one of the transmission band anchors... hard to say...
