Out of the blue instead of shifting at 2200 rpms it now shifts at 3200 rpms. When slowing down it shifts really hard out of 3rd gear. It almost jerks the whole car. I unplugged the TC soleniod to see if that was sticking,no change. I changed the fluid and filter yesterday, no change. The old fluid was fine, nice red color no smells, no excessive gunk in it. I see no leaks, it does pump the fluid the length of the car (mid engined) to the radiator in the front for cooling, I see no ATF in the coolant. Someone mentioned a 3rd gear preasure switch. A $6 part that is easy to change out. WHat does this switch do, and would that causethe problems I am having? Please help this is my project car, I love it dearly, and I know very little about transmissions.

The 3rd clutch pressure switch is wired in series with the TCC lock up solenoid. The 3rd clutch pressure switch is closed by the fluid pressure from the 3rd clutch fluid to complete the circuit for TCC lock up. A bad 3rd gear clutch pressure switch would not cause a loss of 3rd gear.

the 3rd gear pressure switch needs changing along with the tcc solenoid.. both are under the side cover... so you will probably need to drop the pan again to get the oil out before you can get at the side cover..
the solenoids fail... drive owners up the wall... in failure mode it keeps the TCC locked all the time... so it stall the motor at stop signs and lights.. you have to rev the motor and drop it into gear to get it to move... both not good for the trans lifespan.. the solenoids get dirt in them ... and stick.. sometimes they go into failure mode when the trans heats up... unplugging the connector does not cure it all the time... most transmission parts houses have them in stock... delco # 8689901 VALVE,TCC SOL. at autozone #52-0210 . i don't see a part number for the pressure switch.. there are ones with a single terminal and some with two terminals.. find an automatic transmission parts store.. they will cost a lot less.. and they will have the side gasket also.. for under 5 bucks...
plan on at least having to crimp the new TCC solenoid to the old harness inside the side cover... and it takes a short oil pressure switch socket to get it out... if you have to use channel locks to get it out.. when putting the new switch in.. do not distort the crimp that holds the cap on.. or it will leak... right back to square one..
