2005 F-150 4 x 4 w/5.4L. High pitched (whirring) noise. Seems to be coming from above the engine just in front of the firewall. Started intermittently at less than 12K miles. First noticed during very cold weather. The sound stopped after a couple of minutes of operation. Vehicle now has 80K miles and the sound is present at higher outside temps and continues. The frequency seems to increase with engine speed. When transmission up-shifts the frequency decreases. Don't know if it is a vacuum, intake, or transmission issue. Performance is not adversely affected.

Possible torque converter problem, do a filter and fluid change.
