My fiance has a 98 GC that is missing the front drive shaft & I want to get a new one & put it in for her but I don't know what transfer case is in the vehicle. Is there a way to find out the transfer case model without going under the vehicle?
Also the rear hatch will not open when the handle is pulled, this I believe is an issue with the locking mechanism. Is there a way to get to the inside os the hatch with it still close to correct this problem?

most of the jeep rear hatches are also locked and unlocked with the power door locks.... can you hear the tailgate lock and unlock when you hit the button on the drivers door...
there may also be a pushbutton on the dash to unlock it...
can you reach the inside of the rear door... from inside the jeep???
i wonder why the front driveshaft was removed????
if the gc has a 4.0... it miight have a new process model 249...
you did not say which motor of the three it could be or if it is an automatic...

The GC has a 4.0 auto trans with full time awd, she doesn't remember why it was removed, she thinks there might have been a problem with the front differential.
I can here the hatch unlock but when I pull the handle its like it is still locked.
