help...changed the idle air control valve...rear o2 sensor.....timing belt.....spark plugs and cables....fuel filter..knock sensor...check engine light comes and goes and car still stalls and even turns off when coming to a stop...she will turn back on but it's such a nuisance...doesn't do it all the time...any1 had this trouble b4...between local mechanics and dealer I have had no luck they want to change catalytic converter...I don't trust them...check engine light goes off with 2 bottles of octane booster but eventually check engine light will come back on...some1 advised that I should raise the idle...weird thing car runs beautifully besides the occasional stalling

Hello,

I have a different car with a similar problem.  1996 Nissan Maxima with 207000 loving miles.  Car has been great until this past week, random sluggishness accelerating from a stoplight and stalled altogether for the first time yesterday.  Nissan forums posts state it could be "RAF" or "Fuel Pump" issue.  When you said while braking though, that also made sense as it only feels like the car struggles at lower rpms during braking and at a stop.  I thought it was just bad gas at first, but now I'm worried it could be more difficult to diagnose hence more costly.  I have not gotten a check engine light or anything, pretty weird.  Heading to the shop tomorrow and will keep you posted, please do the same for me!

Thanx,
Going to test the low rpm theory by turning on the a/c at the areas where the car usually does it thing...only thing is... if it is indeed low then the car should stall all the time when I hit the brakes...it only does it in certain areas or situations and that is when I have to come to an abrupt stop or stop at the bottom of a descending hill. will keep you posted....have u done tune up yet? including fuel filter?

Hi,
any luck? my car is possessed, all of a sudden its not stalling but still has check engine light on. inspection is in September , so I am going to try the old octane booster trick to clear the check engine light, its worked b4.

My wife has a 2004 Subaru Forester and it has similar symptoms.  It stalls along the same road and in the same place.  The engine light comes on and goes off without any particular reason.  Spark plugs have been replaced but that's about it.  I am going to try running the a/c and see if that makes a difference.   Subaru mechanic here also suggested replacing the catalytic converter but I'm like you ... don't trust them.  There has to be a way to test for a clogged or bad converter

I had the same problem with my '04 Forester, it would stall when breaking or often times when going downhill when I wasn't giving it any gas, and the check engine light would come on.  Turns out that I needed a new neutral position switch.  $35 for the part, and about a hundred in labor costs.  Its been a year and I haven't had any problems with it since.
