Automatic 4 speed.

I was at a stop light, turned green, and I hit the gas. Sputtered and went no where fast! It will limp along, but I'm stuck in 2nd or 3rd gear. Reverse works, but when I'm in a drive gear (even in low gear) it won't start in 1st. Can't get it to downshift, either. Cannot get it into first for my life.

Shift solenoid?

AHH!

V6 3 liter, runs fine. Speed sensor is 6 months old, speedometer is accurate and does not jump. 106k miles on transmission, but performed fine with no slipping or skipping until this single incident.

Any help appreciated.  

Guess what!? I sold the car. I got it into first. It needed to cool down even more. My problems are gone.
