We have a 2005 Toyota Rav4 with a 5 speed. Underload, especially in 5th gear, the shifter rattles. You have to either hold the shifter itself or push against it to make it stop vibrating. We were told by the Toyota mechanic that it is because the transmission is cable driven and that's what it sounds like. It is really annoying. The RAV has 10,000 miles on it. We thought that a bolt might be loose or there might be a gasket missing. The mechanic says no. Any ideas?????

One of a few things... Bad or loose tranny mount or missing parts. If the shifter is cable like the mech said then it should be quieter than a direct linkage. I would take it to another dealer or contact Toyota regional manager.
