I am looking into getting a Volkswagen as my next car. I don't know how to drive a manual transmission, but would it be worth it on a Volkswagen to learn if I find a good enough deal? Do manuals give any benefits on a VW over an automatic or any problems on a VW over an automatic? Which do you recommend to get the most out of a VW?

Depends where you live. If you live in a metro area with lots of traffic, you go with the automatic. Manual's should be cheaper than automatics. If you are a car nut, you'll enjoy the manual best.

I live in a hybrid metro/middle-of-nowhere area. Montgomery, AL if that helps. I drive interstate to work and to get around town.

With a manual transmission you can squeeze more power out of the car, and if you drive it right you'll save a little more on gas.  Although like the last guy said if you plan on being stuck in traffic a lot, you'll probably be better off with automatic, because it'll save you the trouble of having to shift in and out of gear, plus you won't have to worry about wearing you clutch out too soon.

What model year/engine are you looking at?

I'm thinking a Cabrio, Jetta, or Passat, all used.
