Im am going to soon purchase my first vehicle and I would like it to be a good purchase. Im not into 2 doors as insurance will be high as hell and it takes too much time fitting people in the back, and I am a considerate guy . I am in love with Audis, and the AUDI A6 QUAT 2.8L seems like the perfect purchase for the buck. The problem with these cars is that they have an amazing price tag, but the mileage will be atleast 200k! I figured its a German car, and repairs will be needed as soon as possible, which will cost a fortune, making this car not such a good purchase. Im planning on putting speakers, subs, amps and a new deck into my car, so I dont want it to be a tiny car, as I want some good quality sound going through it. Ive looked at many cars and only cars I like are the Honda 4-doors and the Audi 4-doors like the A4 1.8T and 2.8Q. I have looked at many sales and the Audi looks like the perfect car, but the mileage kills it! What should I ***
Example: http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-cars-over-5K-1998-AUDI-A4-4dr-1-8T-QUATTRO-5-Sp-manual-Leather-Sunroof-W0QQAdIdZ51952681
Another example, costs a bit more: http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-cars-over-5K-Audi-A4-2-8-Quattro-W0QQAdIdZ52337968
IMO, this car is BEAUTIFUL, performance is amazing, and you can make it look very luxurious with a few upgrades
Im looking for a 4-door vehicle with good performance, wont need many/any repairs for a long time, fuel efficient, looks good and luxurious, spacious, looks good with mods such as bodykit and rim upgrades..reason for the love towards the Audi

Either way you slice it, you'll be paying a ton on mechanical and repairs. My best word of advice is to avoid the 1.8T engine. There's a known defect on the engine that VW refuses to recall. German cars are super expensive to maintain and repair, so I hope you know how to do a lot of the work yourself.
I used to have a 2003 A4 1.8T Quattro. Blew my coil packs within 4 years of ownership...I got it brand new.

What other cars could I look into in this price range which offer efficiency with fuel, luxury look, low in mileage/ does not need much repairs for a while, looks good with upgrades/mods and is overall a good vehicle. 4-door too! I love the GMC Denali as it can be a car for me and all the buddies, but that thing burns fuel galore and is like 20grand used so thats a quick no no
What else can I look into?

Well, from person experience, the A4 1.8T doesn't do too well in the fuel efficiency dept. Haahaa. My other suggestions would depend on whether you are looking for AWD or not. Another thing is luxury. If that is very important, then you have to stick with the luxury brands. If I were in your shoes, I would consider the following. My suggestions are mixed with RWD, AWD, FWD and non-lux cars.
Acura TL Acura TSX Honda CR-V Infiniti G35x Lexus IS300 Subaru WRX STi (not pretty, but prettier than the new hatchback) Subaru Legacy GT MazdaSpeed6 MazdaSpeed3
If you are willing to venture into American cars, you can try finding an Impala SS.
I personally have driven BMWs and Audi's and they where plagued with "issues", even when they wre brand new. So even if the engine lasts forever, the electronics won't. I used to have a Mazda3 for about 3 years. Never took it into the dealership for warranty work. Now I have a 08 G37, so I'm hoping this puppy shows me how well built it is compared to the German ones.

My advice with audi's, is if you really love them then you have to have the money to take care of them. They have so many issues, just all this ticky tacky stuff all the time. The 1.8t is the least problems, but bigger the engine the bigger the problems with these cars. I have driven several Audis and you could go over a bump and the check engine light will come on... I swear!! They are extremely touchy and very much a personality car. Anything Grerman though will have more issues and more expensive to fix. I would probably consider an Acura or something like a Subaru WRX, or a Honda

"Acura TL Acura TSX Honda CR-V Infiniti G35x Lexus IS300 Subaru WRX STi Subaru Legacy GT MazdaSpeed6 MazdaSpeed3"
I am honestly not into any of those cars..I want a car that has the perfect look, and a head turner when put up with rims, lowered, with a few other modifications as its my first car. I am an Audi lover but those little repairs seem like they would be annoying as hell. The Hondas are also pretty nice but most of them I dont like one bit..Any other suggestions? PS the Infiniti and the Lexus you listed cant be found under the 10,000 price range

Well, if you love Audi's then you should get an Audi because I think you won't be happy with anything else. So I think my suggestions would be rather pointless. You can try the Civics if you really want to go Honda. The TSX is a pretty nice ride if you can swing one. Your only other option is to go American cars...which I don't recommend too much because they are ugly. Audi repairs aren't "little" haha. there is nothing little about the fees they charge to fix them. Personally, I'd go with the Subaru or the Mazdaspeed. Those guys are fast and AWD, perfect for the winter. You can also try Saab 9-3 or Volvo S40 if you are into those. But those have problems of their own. :P

I would buy this car in two seconds if I was sure that it was the best car to buy, which im not! How often would I need repairs on average for a car like this per month/year? This car is amazing, it looks so beautiful..its gorgeous..im speechless

Sorry for the late reply. :P I don't see the car on your link anymore. Probably sold? In any case, there really isn't a way for anyone to tell you how much repairs would be per month. Some months will be better than others. The best advice I can give you is to take reliable mechanic with you to check out the car before you buy. Oh another advice, always put away extra money aside, just in case. There really isn't a way to anticipate future repairs, so always have some cash set aside in case something big needs to be fixed. You are, after all, buying used. If you went new, then warranty would cover most things and you could budget more effectively.

Hi vladdd, I just came across this thread. Well, you might probably have made your decision already (Audi?) :-). Anyway, if you haven't, I can recommend a Web site that might be helpful for you: http://www.MyProductAdvisor.com You will be asked various questions on your preferences. And no worries, it's free and there is no advertising. Well, it's your first vehicle and you seem to know quite well what you want/don't want; so this site should give you quite specific recommendations. Might be worth checking out. Good luck!

Audi's are very nice cars, just make sure you have the $$$ and commitment for the maintenance/repairs. The 1.8T motor does have some common issues but it's not that bad and the coil packs were revised. I've driven an '04 A4 1.8T w/ Sport Package and it handled quite well, but the 1.8T felt a tad sluggish in the heavier Audi (vs a 1.8T Golf/Jetta).

I bought my Audi A4 1.8T with a 5 speed Quattro. I already had to replace a coil pack, a turbo, a cluth, and now I am having problems with the brake system. These cars a very expensive and most parts are only sold at Audi dealers. Good luck with your purchase. I am thinking of trading this car in as soon as I get it fixed. At this rate of repairs I can by a brand new Pick-up even with the gas prices and still come out ahead.

I can speak for the A4, which was my wife's first car. She loved it, but we soon discovered that it is really a pee-poor car. We've had a ton of problems, all under 60k miles. And yes, a ton of money in repairs. I understand that it is likely just the 1.8T engine that is horrible, but I'm turned off to Audi for life. I really can't believe how bad this thing is.

Stay away from the Audi. Under-powered, over-priced, and TERRIBLE customer service. I have a 2007 A4 Premium, and will never buy Audi again.
