Executive Summary
The Sector At A Glance
Key Insights On The Automotive Sector Of Lithuania
Growth in the Lithuanian automotive market is set to slow over coming years as it approaches its maximum potential and consumers feel the effects of falling economic growth and rising interest rates, according to the It Lithuania Automotives Report.
In the first eight months of 2006, new vehicle registrations in Lithuania grew 38.3% year-on-year (y-o-y) to 20,446 units, with Volkswagen leading sales followed by Toyota and Skoda. Automotive sales were spurred on by consumer demand in the car sector, while demand for commercial vehicles has soared despite falling business confidence. Post-summer sales growth is therefore set to fall moderately in line with seasonal trends. Car sales growth will be sustained in Q406 due to a hike in the minimum wage and reductions in the personal income tax rate from July. Given the trends observed in the first eight months of 2006, It has raised its forecast automotive sales growth rate from 27% to 33%, with sales expected to total 20,710 by the end of 2006.
Lithuania's automotive manufacturing sector is largely oriented toward specialist component production, with a particular focus on wiring devices (there is a strong electronics capability within the Lithuanian workforce). Within the components sector, the main segment is the wire and cables industry, accounting for 79% of output. SY Wiring Technologies Lietuva is the key player, it is co-owned by Germany's Siemens and Japan's Yazaki. Exports of components and parts are around double those of imported parts, in value terms. While there are a few large employers, the industry is dominated by small- and medium-sized players, with most firms employing up to 50 workers. Lithuania's entry to the EU brings with it a wealth of new opportunities for component makers, as membership increases potential clients' quality perceptions, against a backdrop where the country's autos parts sector is already creating a reputation for itself in key specialist areas. However, the recent adoption of new overtime laws - which effectively ban payment for overtime - could militate against efficiency.
