So I commute about 90 miles a day to work.  I live in Oregon and currently have a 2001 Ford Ranger.  Not the best for commuting.   I've found two cars for $5000 that I'd like to purchase for the drive.  I'd like some advice on which one you think I should get.

The first is a 2003 Chevy Malibu.

Here are the details on it.

Mileage: 60,200

Features: A/C: Front, Cruise Control, Power Locks, Power Steering, Remote Keyless Entry, Airbag: Driver, Airbag: Passenger, Alarm, Anti-Lock Brakes, CD Player, Power Windows, Rear Window Defroster
Selling Points: 2003 Chevy Malibu, sedan, automatic, 4 DR, 60K miles, silver, gray cloth interior, power windows, AM/FM/CD, AC, cruise control, alarm system, remote keyless entry, brake system well maintained, new fuel pump, oil changed every 3K miles, non-smoker, runs great. Perhaps this would be perfect for a graduation gift since it is a safe and reliable car. I have all vehicle maintenance records including the current passing emissions certificate.

Choice #2 is 1999 Saab 9-5

Here's the ad for this one.

4-door sedan, 4 cyl. with turbo, fully loaded with leather, AC, PW, PDL, cruise, tilt, 5 speed manual, sun roof, new tires. Gets 34 hwy. miles/gal. Very clean and in great condition. 78500 miles. Clean title. $5,ooo OBO.

I think the Saab would be more fun to drive and it has more options that I like, but I worry about repair bills and I've read anything before 2000 can be unreliable.

While the Chevy isn't the coolest thing in the entire world.  I think it would be very reliable.  Repairs probably wouldn't be too bad if there was any.  I test drove the Chevy today and it seemed really solid on the freeway and driving around town.

Does anyone have any advice or insight either way that they would like to share?

Thanks a bunch and here's some pix of both the cars.

With gas prices rising daily and a 90 mile commute, fuel efficiency becomes a greater concern. Your two options listed are definitely a shift in that direction. The next concern I would prioritize is durability/repair costs. Typically speaking, the Saab will be a greater challenge to find mechanics who are competent and repairs will most likely be more expensive. Replacement parts will be more readily available for the Chevy.

Cost of insuring the vehicle may be a factor to your equation. Contact your agent to get a comparison.

Best wishes in your car buying endeavor.
