Is it really necessary to have a GPS?
I know that it will help in tracking the places you have to go and it will make navigation better but, the map is cheaper. anybody know where I could get 'em cheap GPs?

thanks

I don' think its necessary to get a GPS. But it does come in handy if you go or live in a big city and get lost. It really depends on the person. My wife uses one most of the time since she drives through neighborhoods she isn't familiar with while I typically know my commuting area well so I don't need it. It is nice to have on road trips tho. I personally don't care for built-in GPS systems, i think they are overpriced and really inconvenient since you can't take them on the go.
With that said, we opted for a Garmin Nuvi 660 over a year ago. Last time I checked, the Nuvi 650 is available at Costco for $299.  Considering I paid $700 for the 660 when it first came out, the 650 is probably a good deal.
I don't have experience with Magellan or TomTom, but I do think Garmin makes pretty darn good GPS units.

I feel GPS is unnecessary for the most part.  Nothing like a good road map to find all the side streets and back roads needed to get around.  I find once I memorize the map in question, I can see it in my mind and then just go as needed.   However, for directionally-challenged people like my dear mother, a GPS is proably a good choice for them.   It all depends on how well you can go.  I find good road maps are the best, for Mapquest has been very inaccurate at times for me.  As a New Englander, I really can't justify spending a lot of money on a GPS when a $2- $10 road map is perfectly good and lasts a long time in the car.  Just my option.   Road maps have been very good at keeping me on track and finding shortcuts ( back road) off main routes that Mapquest would often overlook.

Hey,

I just signed up to this forum board as I was lookin' around and saw your post.  I recently saw an offer for a free gps and jumped on it.  It was listed on Fatwallet and the posts from users who have applied seem to indicate this is a legit deal.

check it out.

ask yourself this question....:
Have you ever been on a long trip, driving and driving and feel like you must have passed your exit by now?

there you go! with a GPS, you dont even have to THINK about where you are going...and that's the whole point....

after a long trip, you will feel less tired and stressed out, if you have one.

i held out for a long time with roadmaps, thomas guides, mapquest(which got me lost more than directed), etc....
but then i finally got a garmin nuvi for $199.00 at bestbuy.  it is truly worth every penny if you intend on going ANYWHERE unfamiliar.
Think about it, you can drive coast to coast without ever having to stop and make sure you're on track, or look at a map, and fold it 32 times before cramming it into the glovebox.....that alone should sell you on the idea....
if you never leave town, then forget everything i just said.

i don't think is necessary, but it's convenient and useful. Specially if you travel or look for specific address. I don't have it, but I borrow it from my brother from time to time. But I noticed that some people need it more than others. I think i have a GPS installed in my head

A gps is a tool.  Don't rely too much on it.  I have a Garmin 260wt.  From home it takes me the way I want to go and the same way all of the time.  On the way back it wants to give me a different way.  Sometimes it is accurate, other times it hasn't been.  Don't worry I didn't buy it to show me how to go to work.

I just read yesterday about a woman who got lost in Death Valley, her vehicle got stuck, and her son died.  Too many people think these things are the greatest thing next to slice bread...they aren't.  Like I say it is a tool.  Get a road map.  These things are not perfect.  They are getting better though.

There are instances in Britain where the GPS takes you into this river and people have driven right into it.  Like I say, it is a tool.  Have a backup.  A $2 or $4 map won't break you.

You also have to update the maps which might come out once a year, if you are lucky, and cost you alot of money.  Even then it still may not be up to date.

If you don't travel why buy one?  Are you in your home city most of the time?  Don't waste your money.

I travel so my company bought me one but I still get a map.

gps is handy..... use it as a accurate speedometer...  so you know exactly how fast you are going... if it logs your travel.. you can use the log to get out of a speeding ticket....  it can also get you deeper into trouble if you were speeding elsewhere in your trip...

i took my handheld gps with me on day when a friend wanted to move his boat...   when we pulled away from the dock...   i ask where's the compass...  oh.. its in the van... ... where's the radar display.. its in the van...  where's the new charts...  yep.. in the van...   you can see the boat... google map the santa barbara city cemetery ...  look straight off shore... you will see a bunch of boats floating nice and bright on the surface.. and on to the east of the rest... kinda blurry... thats it.. sitting on the bottom..  oh. my hand held was on board when it sank at anchor.. i was not...  why did the gps come in handy...   the fog rolled in and the wind picked up... then the container ship right behind us called in his location,, speed and course...  right through us in the fog...  with out that gps... i would not have known which way to turn...

GPS--the scourge of the new millennium.  Another toy for you to maintain, not to help you.
If anything, it will help undesirables track you.  I'm not a conspiracy nut, but you don't need the world to know where you are at.

Next, your car will tell you to fasten your seatbelt, or " you're ten miles over the speed limit, slow down" ..or worse.  " You're on a long journey, have you used the restroom"?    Then, it's time to pull over and shoot any system that sounds like your mother-in-law.  Boycott this junk, and simplify.
