I am replacing the timing belt on my Pathfinder, and I cannot get the marks on the belt to lint up with the enbossed marks in the cam pulleys. I checked an old belt that I had replaced some time ago and the marks match the new belt, and the speced tooth counts ar right. Unfortunately the belt I am replacing was mostly shredded and there were no marks, and the belt had slipped so I had no reference to start with. Should I ignore the marks on the belt an use the marks on the cam pulleys only? Is this a common problem? Does anyone have experience with this specific engine?

You said the belt slipped . Did you align the timing marks on the pulleys with the marks on the block? Becareful turning this engine , or cam over it is an interruped motor, you could bend a valve, turn the cam sprockets and crank over manualy. After you get the marks aligned the marks on the belt should line up.
