I test drove this cream puff van which only has 77,000 mi on it and there is a whine from the tranny that increases with speed.  It gets progressively louder and at 55 mph it  is very loud. It shifted without any problem and seller says it has had this issue for the 10 years she has owned it never had any tranmisssion problems. Local mechanics, not dealers, told owner this is normal which I doubt because I own a 1990 E150 which is much quieter.

Any suggestions what is causing the whine and can this be diagnosed by electronically or would a test drive by a tranny shop be sufficent to locate the problem?

it doesn't sound like a transmission. bearing and gear noises in transmissions are likely to have a point of change... for example, in 3rd gear (direct drive) there are no planetaries moving because the input and output shafts are turning at the same rate. another example... at 55 mph, the torque converter should be engaged (much of the time) and there will be no movement. other examples are... pumps, filters and low fluid can be heard at an idle and change with rpm, not road speed. i would think that you have a rear differential or axle bearing failure.
