bought a 91 v8 4x4 dakota.  before i looked at it the owner had it running before i go there, which should of made me turn away in the first place.  anyways he said its rebuilt tranny, you can tell someone has had it out and cleaned the daylights out of the case.  tranny fluid looks brand new and says it hasnt been changed since he had the repairs done.  anyway it shifts hard, especially in the beginning.  sometimes you cant even drive the thing intill its all the way warmed up or it wont shift at all.  anyway have a clue or might beable to atleast point me in the direction to go about getting this fixed?

I take it that this is a 3 speed TF-6 (904), sound like a hydraulic leak problem not building pressure . The most difficult job to iron out is after some one else did work on any unit. You have no idea what he replaced or did not replace in the rebuild.
Did he replace the converter?   Did he install new lip seals in the drums,  did he nick the lip seals for the rear clutch? Did he replace the stator seals?  What was his clutch clearance?  What was the condition of the governor?  These are all the things that you don't know.
the only thing I could tell you is take a line pressure test cold and the warmed up, and then compare the . And then do a Governor pressure test cold. Could be a hydraulic leak ,or a sticking valve in the governor.
Either a bad converter . but just an uneducated guess. You really have to find out more info about the rebuild.
