An EGR valve, mounted on the intake manifold, that meters a small amount of exhaust gas into the intake manifold to dilute the air/fuel mixture. This keeps combustion temperatures below 2,500°F and reduces the amount of NOX, (Nitrogen produced in the engine.)

thanks for the explanation. I really appreciate it very much. One more question, do I really need to change it? What are the chances if I didn't change it?

My experience with not changing the egr valve when it needed it was a burned out exhaust valve and poor fuel milage. If your egr valve is vaccuum assisted then you can check to see if it's the problem by removing the vaccuum hose connected to it and plugging the little hose with a screww or bolt , then drive around and see if the engine improves . If the egr is elctrically assisted the computer should give you a check engine light if it is not working properly.
