My dads van started to overheat a few days ago. So today we installed a new radiator assuming that was the problem. Soon after installing the short less than 2 mile drive home from the shop overheated the car nearly to red line producing steam and weird noises. So I shut it off and cooled it down by adding water.
After it cooled down I went back to try to idle it again, once again it overheated with out reaching the red line it produced steam again. I tried turning the heater on full blast to see if it would decrease the temperature, I did not notice any real decrease and didnt notice much heat being produced by the heater.
I think there may been an issue with the either the water pump or the fan. I don't remember the fan spinning at all while the car was idle even thought it was overheated.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I just got a phone with a buddy, who says that he thinks its the thermostat from what I described to him. He said that the water\coolant in the radiator bulging (going down and up) means the thermostat is not allowing the coolant to cool the engine.
Is there any truth to that?

If you still are having your problem it sounds similar to one that I had last summer. I replaced the fan *** There is a clutch in the fan and the way to tell if it is working is to run the engine, shut if off and watch the fan, if it continues to free wheel your clutch is gone. It should stop almost immediately. Fifty bucks at a wrecker and four bolts and you are done.
