I am a fairly new 1998 Land Rover Discovery owner. I recently bought a replacement fuel filter and planned to replace it my self. I asked at my local Land Rover dealership if I should do this and was told that I could screw up the fuel system if I didn't have the proper tools. So I gave them the filter I HAD PURCHASED MYSELF FOR ABOUT $30.00 and they charged me $110.00 to install it for me. I felt this was a tad pricy, so in the future I would like to go ahead and change it my self as I have on EVERY OTHER VEHICLE I HAVE EVER OWNED FOR THE LAST 50 PLUS YEARS OF MY LIFE. Is there any special tool actually necessary or any damage possible in this procedure, or was I just the victim of the old "okey doke"?
Gullible.

Interesting,
The issue is simple, dealers don't make any money telling you the truth. lol A gas filter is a simple change with simple tools, so dealer put the fear factor into play and screwed you, plain and simple. You could have changed filter in about ten minutes blindfolded, so is sounds like that got you for book rate, which is a rip off in most cases, so sorry you learned the typical lesson of how all dealers operate, on profit, not free advice.
Good luck, Mike

all you need is the pliers with chain, I really don't know how to call it but this tool helps you remove the filter since its fit is surely tight this will give you the grip. about the damage the dealer is telling, I guess its pretty impossible unless you don't tighten the filter properly which will result to leak.
by the way if your going to replace your plugs at the same time, you can try using Pules Star Plug. Not really sure if it will fit your car but I'm sure it will surely serve its purpose.
good luck. smith
