So I now have a gaping hole in my right CV boot and I need to replace it. Can anyone give any suggestions or wisdom as to how I can do it myself? I heard somewhere that you can buy a replacement boot that wraps around the shaft so you don't have to dismantle the whole thing.

You can replace just the boot. It is called a CV joint split boot. But you will need the special tool to install the boot clamps. Worms clamps just won't hold tight enough.
