Long version: My 93 GMC 2500 with 190k mi.lost reverse. Also no holdback in low. After inspection I discovered that the pins that hold the low/reverse band had worked out of the case. I decided that, while the trans was out I'd install new frictions, steel, rubber, bands, converter, and internal harness. I re-located the pins to their proper location and then tig welded a small bead around the outside of the holes to prevent them walking out again. After replacement, the trans worked perfectly until it got up to full operating temp. Then no reverse, but good holdback in low. When its cold it works good, but as it warms up going into reverse gets mushier until it has no reverse at all. Has anyone experienced anything like this or have any clue where to start looking?

I am also having the same problem. Transmission works fine when cold but then lose reverse just as he described as well as forward gears occasionally. It sometimes goes into default of 2nd gear b ut is fine after cooling down again. Can you be more specific on the hydraulic leak in the center support?

I recommend installing the Transgo Shift Kit....this is assuming the the clutches or center/support is not damaged. It's easy to install and might just fix your problem.
The "leak" jgate was referring to is something that the shift kit addresses and works well. Try it and let us know how it worked.

It sounds like it is worth a try. If it doesnt solve the problem, it would be one less thing to replace if I wind up having it overhauled. Thanks.

those transmissions have lots of hard part damage wear with that mi the direct clutch is used for 3rd also, how does it feel? also a shift kit won't fix that, my best bet is that you over looked some parts that are bad, it's very common to have wear in the direct drum clylinder were the center support rings seal
the long bushing wears out thats pressed in the support and the ring lands cut into it also all the rings must be replaced and you can use the part to size the ring if care is taken

Redhawke The Transgo HD2 shift kit did in fact solve my problems. My transmission is better than ever.

The shift kit cant perform miracles. The problem will most likely be back real soon.
