My daughter has a 1994 Ford Explorer. It has a habit of refusing to start after engine is warmed up. She can drive it to a store, get there come out to restart her car and it won't fire. If she waits 20-45 minutes it will then start. Fuel filter has been changed. Anybody have any suggestions or experiences with this problem. She really likes the vehicle and wants to keep it, but feels it is too unreliable as it is. Because she lives in CA and I live in NC, I cant check fuel pressure or other checks for her. Please respond if you have any knowledge of this symptom. Thanks.

First of all you are going to have to confirm when in a "no start" codition, if you lost fuel or spark or both. Could also be a leaking fuel pressure regulator, leaking fuel into the plenum, through the vacuum hose.

i guess she could try starting the car when it is cold and then let it warm up. Then she could shut it off and herself or someone else could remove the rubber vacuum hose from the fuel pressure regulator and see if they can see any wetness at that connection. That would indicate that the seal at the regulator has failed and is sucking additional fuel into the engine and giving it just enough to flood the engine after she turns it off. If thats the problem she will need someone knowledgeable to replace that part. The part does not cost that much and it is a common item to eventually fail.
