Hello....
I have owned three Ford Aerostars in the past, and was very happy with these vehicles. I decided I was ready for another one, and recently purchased a 1991 4.0 V6 with 180,000 miles. The van is very clean and cosmetically nice with the long body and four captains chairs. It runs and drives very nicely, except for the following.....
I have two problems with the engine:
1. I have exhaust leaks between the heads and manifolds; is it necessary to remove the engine to fix these, and;
2. the oil pressure is very low. I know the guage is not at fault, as the lifters are noisy, but I do not hear any connecting rod noise. I drained the oil and soaked the lower crankcase with a gallon of lacquer thinner for a couple of days (of course I did not start the engine) in case the strainer was clogged up and put new oil in, but this did not help. I then repeated this same process and filled the crankcase with sae 40 w oil, and this did not increase the oil presssure either. I am using a Ford filter.
What to do next? I read in my shop manual the oil pan could be removed with the engine in the vehicle. Should I check the oil pump and/or the main and insert bearings, and journals? Is there another place these engines are known to lose oil pressure from? I have put over 400,000 miles collectively on my other Aerostars and have yet to have any internal engine problems. The transmission, of course, is the weak link in the chain!
Thanks to everyone!
Ray
