Hey,
I have a 1996 explorer that will not change into 2nd unless I let out of the gas. I run the RPMs up like a stick then let out of the gas and it will change into gear.
It runs great in all other gears, and downshifts with no problems.
Thanks for you help...

Sounds like you don't actually have second gear. We have a 93 explorer that was doing the same thing, revs high in first then when let off dropped to third. We were told the Ford used inferior parts in our year model. Never the less ended up costing us $1400.00 to rebuild. Works like a charm now Hope this helps

The exact same thing happened to me and I have a 2002 Ford Explorer XLS so apparently they continued using the same inferior parts. Cost me about $1500 to get it fixed.
