replacing the timing belt and the camshafts are out of time. Manual shows a camshaft alignment bar on back side of cams but it seems this could leave one or both of the cams 180 degrees out. I must be missing something Please help. Thanks in advance.

There is an aditional tool that you need , it is a TDC timing peg.And the cam has 2 notches on them, use the second one indexed to the lower cylinderblock.Install the timing peg roll the cam ao it stops against the peg and install the alignment tool on the exhaust cam first.

What manual are you useing? Please don't tell me Chilton or Haynes or Mitchel.
If you need the right and full procedure I can email them to you.I have done 7 or 8 of these and after the first one it is realy easy, with the right tools.

Wow, Thanks so much for the quick response. I need to have this ready for a friend by Monday AM. Sorry to say i am using the Mitchell OnDemand software and its not very clear. Unable to locate the hole for the timing peg on the block, or tell the exact position of the cams.
Sure wish i had your expertise behind me right now.
Thanks again for your help and please feel free to email me at gary9857@sbcglobal.net

where is the hole for the peg?  camshaft or crankshaft? if camshaft, front (gear) or back (where the alignment tool fits into the slots)

I just spun the intake cam lobes just past intake and the exhaust approaching open . . then aligned the slots horizontally...  is that not a solution

The crankshaft TDC peg hole is located on the outside of the block just behind the crank sensor connector.

Is it possible that you could email information on realigning of the cams and setting the cams to the correct position of a 98 ford escort 2.0 ztec motor.  I just changed the oil control solenoid.
