I am having problems with the engine light coming on. The dealership has so far replaced what they called a defective fuel cap. The light came on again about 2 weeks later. This time I was on a trip and suddenly started smelling gas fumes really strong. The dealership this time replaced a fuel line hose that they said had a hole in it and also replaced a defective charcoal canister. I picked the car up on Friday afternoon. The light was not on. On Sunday, the light came back on again. I am totally frustrated. The dealership does not seem to be able to pinpoint the problem and so far I have paid out between 4 & 5 hundred dollars. Has anyone else had this problem with their 2004 Toyota Avalon or any model of Toyota Avalon?

If the codes coming up is for the EVAP system , which it promaly is since they changed the fuel cap,the pest way to find the problem is with a "smoke" test, that way the mechanic can see where the fuel smell is coming from.$500.00 for a fuel cap and canister? Glad I don't have to deal with "dealers" find a good local independent shop in your area.

Thank you for responding to my question. You seemed very knowledgeable on cars. I was told by the dealership in the beginning that the problem was in the EVAP system. On Thursday they ordered a "smoke machine" and this morning I took my car in for this test. They seem confident this machine will locate the problem. I am hoping this will be resolved soon and I will share the final outcome in hopes it may help others down the road.
Thanks again for your response! These forums are wonderful!
